Rising Female Artists Defining the Music Industry in 2024
Names like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Nicki Minaj have dominated the music industry for more than a decade with their multitudinous hits and multifaceted styles. These wonderfully talented women deserve this recognition and continue to write and produce chart-topping work to this day. However, a new generation of women has hit the stage and the recording studio, with songs so popular they are defining the industry in 2024. The world needs to keep an eye out for these ladies, as they may be the next Britney Spears or Beyoncé.
Chappell Roan
Chappell Roan is one of these powerhouse female artists of 2024. Roan has been writing and working in the music industry for quite some time now. She has cited her influences as including a range of lyrical and compositional geniuses, from Lana Del Rey and Lorde to Kate Bush. She was a struggling artist, initially signed and then quickly dropped by Atlantic Records after releasing an EP, but she never gave up on her passion.
Now, music written and released years ago, in addition to new songs, is gaining widespread popularity. Roan has amassed a significant cult fanbase, championing and resonating with the LGBTQ+ community, and bringing the concept of compulsory heterosexuality into mainstream pop music. Roan embraces queerness and femininity unapologetically and confidently, and although she dated men in the past, she now identifies as a lesbian. Her fan base sees her as a “queer pop icon” and extremely authentic as she boasts a drag-queen-like aesthetic on stage through makeup and clothing.
Although her following and success are already substantial, Chappell seems to only be getting started. More and more people are discovering her by the day, especially through platforms like TikTok. For instance, under the original audios of her songs “Good Luck, Babe!” and “Hot to Go,” around 100.4k videos have been created in total. There are innumerable duplicate audios of her original sound and many more videos that have been created under them.
Sabrina Carpenter
Another top female artist of 2024, Sabrina Carpenter, definitely appreciates Roan’s work and covered her song “Good Luck, Babe!” Carpenter’s own music rivals that of any other artist in the industry. Her 2024 songs “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” have reached #3 and #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, respectively. She has been releasing music since 2014 and started out as a child actor on Disney Channel, but is now blossoming as a musician, currently opening for Taylor Swift on Eras Tour in Latin America.
Sabrina is now heading on her own Short N’ Sweet Tour, and a world tour seems likely in the future, or so fans hope.
Tyla
Showcasing how the virality of social media helps spread musicians’ popularity, Tyla’s hit song “Water” went viral on TikTok, skyrocketing her career to new and unforeseen heights. Under only the original sound of “Water” 1.5M videos were created. A TikTok dance was made to this song based on her live performances, which she had the opportunity of exhibiting on the Jimmy Fallon Show! A singular tik tok video of her performing this dance impressively has 146M views and another has 13.4M likes.
Tyla has released other hit songs, just as popular as "Water," such as "Jump," under which 677.7k videos were created. Tyla fuses her native style, South African amapiano, with pop and R&B, adding her unique touch to the American music industry. She is definitely not a one-hit wonder, and every one of her fans can’t wait to see what’s more to come from her.
